Green printing in progress: environmentally friendly inks usher in a spring of development
With the increasing advancement of green printing, the market demand for environmentally friendly inks will also see rapid growth, with UV inks and water-based screen printing inks enjoying significant market potential.
UV ink and water-based screen printing ink will have a large market. Currently, the ink used domestically is mostly solvent-based ink. Solvent-based ink is a volatile drying ink, which takes 8 hours to dry naturally. During the drying process, 60% of the solvent evaporates, causing serious pollution. Under the current slogan of “returning to nature and environmental protection first”, this will not only be subject to strict regulatory constraints but also face opposition from neighbors, and screen printing factories do not want to use it. Therefore, it is inevitable that UV ink and water-based ink will occupy the screen printing market in the future.
Market Trends of Screen Printing Ink (UV Ink)
Currently, in terms of production volume and variety, volatile drying inks dominate the market for screen printing inks. However, the production of UV inks has been increasing year by year, and the growth rate is significant. It is only a matter of time before their production surpasses that of volatile drying screen printing inks. Due to the increase in the types of oligomers, prepolymers, and polymerization initiators used in UV screen printing inks, their application range has become broader, making them suitable for screen printing on various printing substrates. Their market share is bound to increase.
Market trends of water-based printing ink
Among volatile dry printing inks, water-based printing inks developed in the 1980s have gained significant attention due to their environmental friendliness. Initially, water-based printing inks attracted considerable interest, but they did not become widespread due to poor water absorption of the stencil and the tendency for wrinkling caused by water absorption during printing on paper. However, these issues were gradually resolved in the 1990s. With the advent of new water-based printing inks using urethane emulsions, the variety of such inks has continued to expand.
From an objective perspective, due to the superiority of (water-based printing ink) in terms of functionality, usage, price, equipment, and supply compared to screen printing ink (UV ink), traditional printing ink will gradually disappear in the screen printing ink market in the future, being replaced by water-based ink and UV ink, with water-based ink eventually occupying the entire market. Commercialized water-based printing ink already meets the principles of simplicity, practicality, and economy. The three major shortcomings previously present have now been overcome.
